Financial Crisis, Geographic Proximity to Banks, and Firm Exports: Evidence from China

摘要：This paper investigates whether proximity to banks enables exporters navigate financial crises. Using data from Chinese industrial firms, we apply a difference-in-differences approach and find that firms located near more banks experienced less decline in exports during the financial crisis. Neighboring banks had a significant positive effect on firms’ export extensive margins, non-core product exports, and the diversification of export products. Geographic proximity to banks improved exporters' access to short-term credit and allowed them to offer more trade credit, but it did not reduce their financing costs. We also find that it was primarily local banks, whose decisions are more influenced by local governments, that provided critical relief to exporters during the financial crisis. Our findings offer evidence that contradicts the predictions of the financial accelerator theory and highlight the role of government influence on banks.

郭继文，湖南大学经济与贸易学院副教授，硕士生导师。研究方向为跨境电商与数字贸易、城市经济等。在《经济研究》《管理世界》《世界经济》《光明日报》（理论版）《数量经济技术经济研究》《China & World Economy》等期刊发表论文多篇。主持国家自然科学基金青年科学基金项目、湖南省自然科学基金青年基金C类项目等。研究成果获浙江省哲学社会科学优秀成果奖一等奖、湖南省标志性理论成果等。
